What causes oily skin?

مايو 29, 2023

Oily skin is caused by the overproduction of sebum, which is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. Sebum is important for keeping the skin hydrated and protecting it from external damage, but too much sebum can lead to oily skin and other skin problems.

There are several factors that can contribute to the overproduction of sebum and oily skin, including:

1. Genetics: Oily skin can run in families, so if your parents or siblings have oily skin, you may be more likely to have it too.

2. Hormones: Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can all affect the production of sebum.

3. Stress: Stress can trigger the production of hormones that increase sebum production, leading to oily skin.

4. Diet: A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can contribute to oily skin.

5. Skincare products: Using skincare products that are too harsh or contain ingredients that strip the skin of its natural oils can actually trigger the production of more sebum to compensate.

6. Climate and environment: Humid climates and exposure to pollution and other environmental toxins can also contribute to oily skin.

Managing oily skin typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes and skincare practices. This may include using gentle, non-comedogenic skincare products, avoiding harsh scrubs and exfoliants, washing the face twice a day with a gentle cleanser, and using oil-absorbing products as needed. In some cases, a dermatologist may recommend prescription medications or treatments to manage oily skin.
